What to do with an engine issue

We all want to enjoy hassle-free motorhome holidays, but what do you do when the engine light suddenly ignites or you break down altogether? This article explains the steps to take to get the right help when you need it.

Engine Light

There could be many reasons why an engine light comes up on your dash. Unfortunately, TrailLite does not have diagnostic capability for engines and we will be unable to help you, but the following pointers should help.

The first thing to do is to consult your vehicle user manual to see what the error light means. There could (hopefully) be an easy fix to the issue.

If it's something more serious, you will need to contact the local agent for the engine manufacturer (Ford, Mercedes, Fiat, Iveco etc). They will have the appropriate diagnostic equipment that they can plug into your engine to find out exactly what's wrong and give you the assistance you need.

Find an agent...

  • Ford - click here for Ford or phone 0800 FORD NZ (0800 367 369)
  • Mercedes-Benz - click here for Mercedes or phone 0800 622 277
  • Fiat - click here for Fiat or phone 0800 286 995
  • Iveco - click here for Iveco or phone 09 277 2070 #6
  • Volkswagen - click here for Volkswagen or phone 0800 577 599

Warning Lights

Generally, an orange light suggests that something needs attention as soon as practical. However, a red light means that an issue needs urgent attention and possibly should not be driven further, without professional advice from the engine's agent.

If you are unsure who your local agent is, check your vehicle manual/windscreen service sticker or you can google search to find an agent nearby.

If you have no internet coverage or are unsure, please call our TrailLite Service Centre on 09 237 0187, and we can help look this up for you.

Breaking Down

If you experience an engine breakdown, you need to pull off the road and park as safely as you can. If your insurance includes roadside assistance, they are your first port of call. They will come to your rescue and either sort the issue or transport you to the nearest agent or garage.

StarInsuranceCampercare

Campercare by Star Insurance have Roadside assist built into their insurance. Call 0800 250 600 and Option 6 for 24/7, 24hr roadside assistance.

covi-logoCovi Insurance

With COVI you need to pay a little extra on top of your insurance for either Silver or Gold cover (so ensure you select this extra when taking out insurance).
Call 0800 805 965 and select option 3 for Wings Roadside assist.
You can visit their website here.

aa-logoAA Insurance

AA has specific insurance for motorhomes, but make sure you sign up for AA Motorhome Plus. For just $75 extra a year, you will have access to their roadside assistance. Phone 0800 500 444.
You can visit their website here.

  • If Roadside Assistance is unable to fix the issue there and then, they will arrange a tow truck to transport your motorhome to a local garage or to the nearest dealer.
  • If your truck is still under the Manufacturer's warranty, your dealer will take care of the issue if found to be a warranty issue.
  • If not under warranty, always get an estimate or quote so you are clear with what you are paying for.

It's never fun to have engine trouble, but hopefully this information will get you back on the road as quickly as possible.
