Top Tips for traveling with dogs over Summer
One of the great advantages of having a motorhome is that when we head off for the summer, we can take our canine companions along on the ride! Our amazing country, with its wide-open spaces, and beautiful forests, rivers, and beaches feels like paradise, not only for us but for our dogs as well. It does mean, however, that you will need to add another dimension to your planning. Here are some of the best tips for traveling with your dog!
Be prepared!
Exploring new places is tremendous fun but for an excited dog who may be too busy following his nose, it may be all too easy to get lost! So ahead of your journey ensure your current contact details are clearly marked on his collar and if he isn’t already, consider getting him microchipped. Also, ensure that all his shots and flea treatments are up to date.
Help your dog settle in
Before embarking on your big adventure, get your pooch comfortable with his new digs. Allow him to spend plenty of time in the motorhome, perhaps even take some short trips before your holiday. Packing his favourite toys, blanky and bed will also go a long way to helping him settle into his “home away from home.”
Pack all the doggy essentials
Safety first!
Safety is a big consideration, especially on our unpredictable New Zealand roads, where you may need to brake suddenly. Investing in a good dog restraint is a must, your local vet or pet shop can help with this, or perhaps consider a crate for your dog. This can have the double benefit of providing him with a safe and comfortable place for the trip.
Don’t forget the Comfort Stops
Motor homing is often more about the journey than the destination, so factor in plenty of time for those all-important toilet stops. It not only gives you and your dog a chance to stretch your legs, but you never know what unexpected and hidden treasures you may discover along the way.
Lots and lots of water!
Every dog lover knows constant access to water is a must. There are lots of travel water bowls on the market that work well.
Watch the temperature
Through the heat of summer especially, it’s essential to ensure that your pooch doesn’t too hot. Heatstroke can be fatal for dogs. Keep a close eye out for signs of overheating and stress, such as lack of energy and excessive panting, yawning, drooling, or whining. Never leave your dog alone in a closed-up vehicle, even with the windows open, as temperatures can rise to a lethal level very quickly. Ensure he has an easily accessed supply of fresh water at all times.

Do your research and plan ahead
Whether it be campsite policy, seasonal farming activities, or conservation areas, not all destinations are going to be pleased to see a dog. It’s essential to plan ahead to ensure that you and your dog will be welcome at your chosen destination. Several helpful websites list dog-friendly locations, so check them out well ahead of time.
A number of campsite apps, including the NZMCA App have dog-friendly filters, which makes finding them so much easier.
